There’s something undeniably special about capturing the early days of a newborn’s life. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a sweet summer in-home newborn session in North Dallas Fort Worth that was nothing short of precious. This session was filled with light, warmth, and the purest of moments as a beautiful baby boy and his loving parents invited me into their home to document this special chapter of their lives.

The Setting: Light, Bright, and Cozy

The family’s home provided the perfect backdrop for this session. Their home, decor and outfits all added a touch of timeless elegance to the photos. The neutral tones allowed the focus to remain entirely on the love and connection between this sweet family and their new bundle of joy.

Capturing Moments: A Blend of Candid and Posed

We began the session with some intimate family shots in the bedroom, where mom and dad snuggled up close with their baby boy. The natural light pouring in through the windows created a soft, warm glow that perfectly highlighted the tender moments between them. We also captured solo portraits of the baby, starting with him resting peacefully on the bed. The simplicity of the setting—just a neutral bedspread and this tiny new life—made for some truly heartwarming images.

We used my newborn basket, which added a charming, rustic touch to the session. Placing him gently inside, we captured the pure innocence and sweetness of a newborn. The basket, combined with the soft white blankets, created a cozy nest-like feel that perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic of the shoot.

Frame Worthy Family Outfits

When it comes to investing in a portrait session, keep this in mind: There’s no such thing as too dressed up!

When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting softer, lighter tones and more muted shades which will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments, and especially complements our native Texas landscape.

As you’re coordinating your outfits with your family, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t actually “match.” In fact, I recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “fits” together. This will create more visual interest, and allow each personality to shine through.
